I’ve never heard of getting points knocked off by playing the Jack of Diamonds. The object is to score the least amount of points to win the game. This is how I know to score:
At the end of each hand, you get one point for each heart in your hand and 13 points for the queen of spades. The game continues until one player gets 100 points or more, or until the dealer quits the game.
If you win all the hearts and the queen of spades in one hand (called Shooting the Moon), then you score zero points and each other player scores 26 points.

This is actually a variation of the game. I’ve played it both ways, but I think officially you don’t get points off for the jack of diamonds.
