Leo asked:

Question inspired from the movie ” Blood Diamond” about the bloody conflicts in Sierra Leone and other parts of Africe for Blood Diamond. But shockingly, calm & secure India has a bigger role in this deal as 92% of blood diamonds are illegaly smuggled to India for polishing them. It is a $8 billion dollar business here. So is Indian & English industries fuel these conflict and thereby kill innocent people for the sparkle of stone ?

No I don’t think so. Bloodshed in Africa means it becomes more difficult to acquire the diamonds. The business will florish more if the diamonds supply was more predictable.

yes indians are responsible for it too. indians are diamond crazy too. 99% of people in india are not aware of blood diamonds. they should be educated about this. there are so many new diamond companies here in india…indians should be made to watch the movie “blood diamond” to know the reality…

I guess what they meant is…. since India is a cheap labor country, therefore getting the diamonds polished, rubbed and then engraved is also cheap. And because of this the total cost of the diamonds keeps low. Low cost means higher profit margins. And thus boosting the blood diamond industry. Had India been expensive country to do all such jobs, thus indirectly increasing the cost, it would have stopped many people from buying and selling of diamonds. So even though indirectly but India is involved.

Also, nowadays India is a big market for diamonds too…..
